What Members Thought

I had a difficult time putting this book down, am probably a little sleep-deprived so this will be short.
I was swept up in the story - the setting, the kennel, the dogs, Edgar and his family, I resented Claude, I stayed in fields, I experienced great loss. And the dogs with their individual strengths, weaknesses, personalities, training schedules and rituals, it all enthralled me.
And then I didn't care so much for the way it ended. Not that I think it should change. Just wish........
And I will ...more

Finally, it’s over!
I had a similar reading experience with East Of Eden. Both of these books felt nearly painful as I hated the story yet was determined to finish it. Sawtelle’s plot was drawn out as much as possible and so boring. Wroblewski takes forever to write each scene of the book. The concluding scene was like 44 pages long! Ridiculous! And it was just a horrible ending.
The only small enjoyment I got out of the book was Edgar’s time with Henry. The rest just felt like endless toil.

Last September (2008) I found Oprah's book pick, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski, astounding not because it wasn't a good book but because I agreed with her, and I so seldom do. As a matter of fact, I can think of only one other time when I agreed with her, Night by Elie Wiesel. Others I thought were just OK or terrible.
If you haven't read The Story of Edgar Sawtelle yet, I assure you, it's wonderful. ...more
