This premise is fascinating, but the prose that comes out of it is so embarrassing - anachronistic, fetishistic, uninspired, I could go on - that I did dramatic readings of passages from it to my girlfriend over dinner. Thick, over-exaggerated dialect in every line. Racist exoticism that comes straight out of a bodice-ripper. Attitudes that make no damn sense from a female protagonist of that time or place.
