I thought it really told the story of human strength and endurance. She survived the hardship with her parents, but I am sure that is what made her so strong. She went to the Army for security and they became her family. She was much stronger than her husband and a great mother. Her PTSD was pretty much expected after all she went through. There are a lot of things that I didn’t like about this book (I know that opening is a shocker since I gave the book 4 stars) but also a lot that I did. I didn’t like that a woman in the military was portrayed as an oddity and I didn’t like how disrespectful Jolene was. What I did like was the look at one family and how deployment changed their lives.
