It started out as a slow read, especially since I hadn't read the first book The Bean Trees. By about 100 pages in though I was totally engrossed on the characters and the different complications of a child not knowing where she comes from. Cherokee values are brought to the front and a different way of looking at the world and assigning moral value to it.
