A strong 3.5 (when will Goodreads give us half stars!). It wasn't a happy book but still a decent story. One that puts you right in the middle in the sad home life of a poor farmer (Ethan), his sickly (and mean-tempered, hypochondriac) wife, and a young girl (relative) who lives with them. Edith Wharton's adept writing gave us a great view of "local-coloring" in rural Massachusetts, in the dead of winter, and somewhere around the turn of the turn of the the 20th century. This book is depressing and lacks morality at its most basic level. If baffles me that this is considered such a wonderful classic piece of American Literature. Between High School and Collage I had to read this book four times and I grew to hate it more and more with each reread.
