A strong 3.5 (when will Goodreads give us half stars!). It wasn't a happy book but still a decent story. One that puts you right in the middle in the sad home life of a poor farmer (Ethan), his sickly (and mean-tempered, hypochondriac) wife, and a young girl (relative) who lives with them. Edith Wharton's adept writing gave us a great view of "local-coloring" in rural Massachusetts, in the dead of winter, and somewhere around the turn of the turn of the the 20th century. Another sad story by this classic author. I liked it anyway.

This book is depressing and lacks morality at its most basic level. If baffles me that this is considered such a wonderful classic piece of American Literature. Between High School and Collage I had to read this book four times and I grew to hate it more and more with each reread.
