Hallowed (Unearthly, #2) in Sophomore Reading Challenge

When I finished the first book in this series, Unearthly, I immediately had to request the next book in the series from the library. I am loving this series!

There will be some spoilers if you haven't yet read the first book in the series, so stop here if you haven't read it yet!

When we left off with Unearthly, Clara made the decision to save Tucker from the fire instead of saving Christian. She turned her back on her life's purpose. When she finally reaches the place that she has always seen in When I finished the first book in this series, Unearthly, I immediately had to request the next book in the series from the library. I am loving this series!

When we left off with Unearthly, Clara made the decision to save Tucker from the fire instead of saving Christian. She turned her back on her life's purpose. When she finally reaches the place that she has always seen in her vision, everything looks different because she is late. The fire has already swept through the area, and she fears that Christian is dead. But, he's not! Not only is he not dead, but he is also an angelblood. Clara thought she was supposed to save Christian, and he thought he was supposed to save Clara. Neither of them needing to be saved from harm, so what was their dual vision all about?

The second book in this delicious YA fantasy series is all about answers. Clara learns more about who her dad really is and the community of angelbloods that she had no idea existed. Angela forms the Angel Club and invites both Christian and Jeffrey to the group so that they can share information and learn more about angelbloods and what they can do. Clara also gets a new vision, and she is tormented by what it could mean.

Although Clara is in love with Tucker, she can't deny the attraction to Christian and the knowledge that she is meant to be with him. It's more clear now than it ever was, with knowing that Christian is also an angelblood.

Sometimes, the middle book in the trilogy can be less than stellar. Not this time! Even though this installment is a bit darker than the first one, my fingers could not turn the pages fast enough. My heart ached for Clara in this one, and I shed some tears. I'm a bit torn here because, as much as I want to find out what happens next, I also don't want this series to end! I'm going to read the novellas first before I read the final book in the trilogy.

My Thoughts: Seriously, can I say how much I love these books? I love this story!

We are back with Clara after what happened at the end of Unearthly. Things sure didn’t go as planned did they? Clara finds out so much more about herself in Hallowed. She also finds out someone is going to die that she cares about. Talk about CRAZY INTENSE!

Do you guys ever feel absolutely speechless after reading a book? Because that’s how I feel after reading Hallowed by Cynthia Hand. GUH. GUH. GUH. I have no words for how emotional Hallowed is.

After the wonderful surprise that Unearthly gave me in Hand's debut, Hallowed takes the series to the next level. It's very different from the first book in the series, but it was SO good.

Where Unearthly mainly focused on Clara's visions of the forest fire and Christian, this book centers around Clara getting more involved in the angel world and the new vision that she's been having. In her debut novel, Unearthly, Cynthia Hand left this reader spellbound and begging for more of her writing and her characters. As many people do, I entered Hallowed with a bit of trepidation--will the sequel live up to its predecessor (because so many don't)? After flying through the pages of Hallowed, I am happy to report that Hallowed does not suffer for a moment from the dreaded middle book syndrome and Ms. Hand's writing and story will continue to enthrall readers.

The first thing that will catch any readers eye is the Clara has morphed into a much more confident person. Gone is the Clara who we felt sorry for most of the time with her clumsy nature and carrot-orange hair. In her place is a much more confident and relaxed Clara whom we can fall in love with. She seems a bit pre-occupied at times with her blossoming romance with fabulous boyfriend Tucker, but I can forgive her that because I happen to LOVE him. :)

The love triangle that we glimpsed in Unearthly becomes a bit more pronounced than it was previously. The tension soars between Tucker and Christian and their attachment to Clara. I tend to flip-flop a lot on love triangles, but I'm here to tell you that I liked Tucker in Unearthly and I LOVED him in Hallowed. There is a lot going on with these two boys and I don't even pretend to know which one is better for Clara in the long run. I did appreciate Christian more in this book so I suppose there's a chance that he'll win me over in book #3...but I think a piece of my reader heart will always belong to Tucker.

If you enjoyed Unearthly, then you can't miss this sequel! Cynthia Hand's writing is spot-on wonderful and her angel story continues to supply a perfect blend of romance, action, and tension (and not just romantic tension--family tension, friendship tension, etc.). While Hallowed is definitely a middle book, it stands on its own as a wonderful novel, avoiding the stagnation of so many middle books. It keeps you engaged in and entranced with the world and characters while piquing your interest in the final installment. ...more

In Unearthly, Clara Gardner found out about her purpose, moved to a new town, and then tried her best to complete her purpose. In Hallowed, it's the after-effects of the first book and how Clara's purpose has perhaps been altered by the choices she made.

Maybe I was just extra emotional, but this book had me sobbing at midnight for I don't know how long. I'm not sure how, but Cynthia Hand has a way of invoking such strong emotions inside of me (I didn't cry in HP, Ellen Hopkins, and some Melina Marchetta books....). That said, the ending is sad, but somehow still realistic and perfect in a way.

As for the other aspects of the book, there wasn't much to complain about. I'm still a fan of Clara and Tucker - there relationship is so sweet and normal ...more

Dear Lord, this book was a constant tsunami of emotions. Cynthia Hand has created a masterpiece, expressing emotions through her characters like vibrant colors and making the reader entwined in Clara's world. Even much dreaded love-triangle that is taking of YA paranormal literature is handled delicately and perfectly. There is nothing that I can find a fault with.

Now, if my eyes would cooperate with me and stop trying to drown me, I might be able to write a better review. But, alas, they will ...more
