Goddess Interrupted (Goddess Test, #2) in Sophomore Reading Challenge

Unfortunately Goddess Interrupted is another Holy Freaking Cliffhanger of a book. Fortunately it's worth the torture. It will leave the reader pining for the next installment. My advice, wait until book 3 is due to release to check this one out. No, really, wait. You'll be thanking me later. Since this is the second book in the series I do not recommend reading this book or review until you have read book 1, The Goddess Test (see my review: http://thelifeoffiction.blogspot.com/... ). The Goddess Test was one of my favorite reads last year and well, Goddess Interrupted may take the cake this year!

In The Goddess Test we met Kate, and her journey to the underworld and the world that belongs to Henry is a battle of wits. She succeeded in her quest for immortality and book 2 is all about her new life. We get to know the Gods and Goddesses we were introduced to in book 1, and learn more about this immortal world. When an enemy returns threatening to destroy this world and the mortal world, the reader follows the events with the characters.

My one complaint in the book, I still give it 5 stars because I seriously love this world and its characters, is the codependent issue and lack of self confidence we begin to see in Kate. She wants Henry so much, even though he acts like he could care less about her. She was so strong and amazing in The Goddess Test that this new Kate was sometimes disappointing. I know Henry has his issues, we all do, but his character was like stone in this book only once or twice showing any real emotion. With that said, I still loved the story and the twist in plot that Aimee creates, this small issue was simply in the background for me, but I feel like I need to make it known.

My favorite part of this book is learning more about the past of Henry and Persephone. I also loved watching Kate rise up as the Queen she is and take charge, becoming more of the girl I loved from book 1.

Fans of The Goddess Test will not be disappointed with the way Goddess Interrupted takes the story. It's an amazing book 2, and a fierce plot that is even more in-depth than the first book. And, the ending is to die for! ...more

Oh dear, where do I start? I read The Goddess Test only shortly before reading this book, and I really saw potential in this book, even though I wasn't blown away by the first installment - I really enjoyed reading that one despite some cringy moments. With this book, not so much.

The first thing about this book that I noticed while I was reading it, was that we are even more inside Kate's head than we were in book 1. She's constantly wondering if she should leave, if Henry will ever love her, if Oh dear, where do I start? I read The Goddess Test only shortly before reading this book, and I really saw potential in this book, even though I wasn't blown away by the first installment - I really enjoyed reading that one despite some cringy moments. With this book, not so much.

The first thing about this book that I noticed while I was reading it, was that we are even more inside Kate's head than we were in book 1. She's constantly wondering if she should leave, if Henry will ever love her, if anyone will ever pick her over Persephone, and more of those whiny thoughts. She was constantly telling about how miserable she was, yet with one small interaction of little talk she would be completely positive all of a sudden, which was completely unbelievable and incredibly annoying. Kate was constantly thinking about how to win Henry and things related to it, and because of her almost depressed state, I felt like I just met Bella 2.0.

Something that came along with being inside Kate's head so much, was the lack of story going on outside of her ponderings. Sure, there were some scenes that involved some development of the plot (total amount: 4) but those moments were so scarce that I found myself wanting to skip pages where we were inside Kate's head again. And I never skip stuff or skim through books, but this one really made me want to do just that.

Another thing I didn't like at all: the behaviour of the 'gods'. They didn't act god-like at all, seemed to have no powers or backbone and acted like a couple of toddlers who had just lost their toys. Zeus is the king of the gods, yet he doesn't even raise his voice to shut everyone up when they were in the middle of yet another fight. They were incredibly insecure, which is weird because they've been alive for eons and should be having some extra barrels of arrogance and confidence somewhere. It just wasn't working for me, and on a slightly similar note, I felt like Kate's 'ability' was simply put into the story to show what was happening in different places at the same time. It didn't feel like it added to the story, Kate's character, or anything else for that matter.

The cliffhanger at the end of the book needs 35% of the book (± 100 pages) to build up and even then it's disappointing, because it's so obvious that it will happen. I hate to write this review, but I just did not like it. At all. The only thing I liked about this book was that the writing somehow kept me going, making it a very quick read. This held so much promise, but it just didn't live up to to expectations and the potential it had. I wouldn't recommend this book.

My Thoughts:

OMG, this book was amazing! I didn’t really knew what to expect after The Goddess Test and I was a bit afraid of Persephone and how she would get in the middle, and that actually happened but this book gave me another view for the gods and I now understand more why she did everything.

Kate as always is amazing, fearless and brave, but still trying to understand her place in this world and now there’s also a Titan on lose that wants nothing more than all Gods destroyed.

The Goddess Test seemed to be a hit-or-miss read in 2011 for many people, but for me, it was definitely a hit and I was eagerly awaiting the release of the second book to add to my collection. School got in the way of reading this one as soon as I would have liked, but now that I've had time to read it and think about it for awhile, I can definitely say that I enjoyed it very much, but it had a little bit of that "middle book" feel for me.

Let me explain.

Let me explain.

Goddess Interrupted has all the makings of a really fabulous book. It picks up with Kate returning to Henry and the Underworld and preparing to be officially made his queen. Things, of course, go terribly wrong and everything goes to hell (quite....literally). Once again, I loved the way that Aimee Carter has crafted this mythology into a modern-day story. The way that the characters are woven together really brings them to life. They seem very much like a family--with all the normal family problems we all experience, just on a bit of a larger scale. The book is filled with plenty of action along the way that definitely keeps you on your toes and hoping that your favorite characters don't die!

What gives this a little bit of that "middle book" feel is the way that the focus is really placed on the relationship between Kate and Henry and the associated angst. There are a lot of moments where it feels like the real drama and tension of the crazy stuff that's happening takes a backseat to Kate's desire to have a real relationship with Henry. Don't get me wrong--I totally understand what she's getting at. However, it feels like the book spends a lot of time setting up the ending and preparing you for the finale.

Make sense?

Regardless, all things considered, this was a fun read and it didn't really disappoint me in terms of the series. I'm super excited for the final installment as well as the upcoming compilation of stories, The Goddess Legacy. If you were a fan of The Goddess Test, definitely take the time to read this second installment (and the ebook novella--The Goddess Hunt). Carter's writing and storytelling is pretty spot on and will keep you engaged and leave you begging for the finale. ...more

If you seen my updates, I did go a little crazy on this book. It was really amazing!

I have to say I love the sequel better than the first, which is hard since technically in Kate’s world there is no sequel, it’s just her life. So, I love the continued story of Kate’s life. Because where we left off on The Goddess Test, with all the drama and Kate becoming immortal, that compares to nothing to what Kate has to face off now!

I really don’t want to write spoilers, but if I don’t then I feel like I l If you seen my updates, I did go a little crazy on this book. It was really amazing!

I have to say I love the sequel better than the first, which is hard since technically in Kate’s world there is no sequel, it’s just her life. So, I love the continued story of Kate’s life. Go pick up The Goddess Test and read it! Then hurry up and get the sequel because if you don’t, you will miss out on this exciting, emotional, thrill ride.

You know what I love about this story. Instead of only feeling sorry for Persephone because of the original myth of her being trapped, I’m also sorry for Hades/Henry because he was in love with someone who didn’t love him back. I love how Aimee created a story around this. Even though I felt bad for Henry, and in the Goddess Test I felt love for the guy, but there were some parts where I just wanted to slap him in this book. Kate loves him, like deeply loves him, but he still hasn’t gotten over Persephone.

I am glad that Kate’s human traits are still with her as an Immortal, because then we wouldn’t be able to recognize her. Through out the book, I felt Kate was strong character. You really do connect with her more in this book. Her being able to put herself on the line when it comes to saving others and her motivation is to save Henry, the man she loves, from dying. Towards the ending, my heart just fell with her, because of the way Henry looks at Persephone and the other things he does. In the end, he comes out alright though.

I am glad we got James and Ava back. In this book, they really do become more real, and I felt like I knew their personalities more. I am also glad for the parts with Calliope in it, because you get more of an understanding why she did what she did. Then in the end, like oh my god!!

I kept hearing people talk about the ending, so I had to control myself from not taking a sneak peek at the ending. It was hard! And when I finally came to the ending, now I know why everyone is talking about it!

This review became longer than what I usually write, but I have to say if you love anything Greek than you must pick up this series! And if you don’t want to be dying to know what happens next, maybe hold off reading this one until October when the third book comes out. Because I am literally dying to know what happens next!!
