Seriously, I cannot believe this book is heralded as another catalyst for the feminist movement. Contrary to pop culture and the Encyclopedia of Feminist Literature, writers such as Sylvia Plath, Anais Nin, Dorothy Parker and Kate Chopin were not feminist. In actuality, they were spoiled little brats who justified their actions by telling people they were artist who chose to live like men in order to give the finger to the system. Harsh, but no less true. And speaking of harsh, hopping beds with Seriously, I cannot believe this book is heralded as another catalyst for the feminist movement. In actuality, they were spoiled little brats who justified their actions by telling people they were artist who chose to live like men in order to give the finger to the system. Harsh, but no less true. And speaking of harsh, hopping beds with people you don't care about on a personal level, don't care if they're committed to another person, and have no desire to see in the future really does make you no better than the man you called a "filthy, whoring dog". If anything, it makes you worse because you know better. It also doesn't make you a feminist.

Being a feminist is more than simply bitching about the establishment and how it aims to keep you down. It's about more than keeping an ever-vigilant eye on the media, the people in your circle, and anyone else you choose to blame for holding you back and cry misogyny to anyone who will listen. And, in case no one told you, it is about more than using sex as a weapon. And finally, being a feminist is not whining about your inability to rise higher than men will allow... it's about having the courage to break the glass ceiling on your own regardless of limitations put upon you.

Ladies, you better recognize!

As for the story, it was beyond disappointing. Filled with a cast of feminist archetypes exaggerated to the point of being caricatures, Plath never fully delves into the deterioration of Esther nor the people surrounding her. Esther simply goes from being a shallow, neurotic hypocrite with no discernible personality of her own to a hot mess without rhyme or reason. Is it because she had some time off from school and actually had time to examine her life? Is it because she couldn't actually pick one singular path or goal? Did she have pretty-girl guilt? Is it because she was on her way to loosing her spot in wealthy society? The world will never know and I no longer care.

If feminist reading is what you interested in, I suggest Maya Angelou, Naomi Wolf, Kate Millet, or Betty Frieden.

Nella prima parte, anche se tutto sembra andare relativamente bene, si ha la percezione che Esther si senta un'outsider rispetto alle ragazze e ai ragazzi che frequenta. E, fin qui, nulla di male, perché non è detto che tutti coloro che si sentono degli outsider debbano cadere in depressione.

Nella prima parte, anche se tutto sembra andare relativamente bene, si ha la percezione che Esther si senta un'outsider rispetto alle ragazze e ai ragazzi che frequenta. E, fin qui, nulla di male, perché non è detto che tutti coloro che si sentono degli outsider debbano cadere in depressione.
Poi qualcosa sembra scattare, non si capisce per quale motivo, e la scrittura diventa sempre più confusa. Non è ben chiaro se il fatto di non essere stata ammessa al corso degli scrittori della scuola estiva l'abbia fatta cadere in crisi, o se Esther avesse già da prima qualche problema, e che questo abbia fatto sì che non venisse accettata. Inoltre, anche i sentimenti poco chiari che prova nei confronti di Buddy e i loro continui tira e molla (e le sue idee moraliste e ipocrite) devono avere influito in qualche modo sul suo stato mentale, per quanto Esther continui a negarlo con se stessa. Certo è che le origini della depressione sono sempre molto oscure e non si può trovare un colpevole su cui scaricare la colpa, come se si potesse far scattare una leva e riportare tutto alla "normalità".

Avrei voluto dirle che se ci fosse stato soltanto qualcosa che andava male nel mio corpo, sarebbe stato meraviglioso, avrei preferito avere qualche brutta malattia piuttosto che quella confusione nella mente, ma mi sembrò tanto complicato e faticoso esprimere quell'idea che non dissi nulla. Mi rintanai ancora di più nel mio letto.

Ed è difficile dover affrontare persone al di fuori, che sperano che un semplice incoraggiamento o una (inesistente) forza di volontà possano far tornare il malato quello che era un tempo.

Odiavo questi visitatori perché continuavo a sentire che essi confrontavano la mia grassezza e i miei capelli ispidi con quella che ero stata prima e che essi volevano che fossi. E sapevo che se ne andavano via completamente sbalestrati.

Il romanzo sembra avere un lieto fine; ma anche se esce dall'ospedale relativamente guarita, e sembra avere una vita nel futuro (dalle sue parole è evidente che abbia scritto le sue memorie tempo dopo e che abbia avuto una vita fuori dall'oppressione della "campana di vetro"), Esther appare al lettore ancora molto, molto fragile e potrebbe ritentare prima o poi l'atto estremo in un modo o nell'altro (come, in effetti, fece la stessa Plath). ...more

Mi è piaciuto! Pensavo che la scrittura sarebbe stata più lenta e meno scorrevole ma non è stato così.
Questa è la storia fortemente autobiografica della Plath. é incredibile vedere come una ragazza brillante di campagna andata a New York per qualche mese si alieni dalla società. Esther aveva tutte le possibilità perchè era molto brava nello studio, ma arrivando a New York è come se si sentisse spaesata. L'ho letto con facilità, in pochi giorni, però non mi ha coinvolto totalmente. In alcuni tratti era appassionante, poetico, riuscivo a entrare nella storia e a lasciarmi trascinare, in altri mi sembrava un po' senza senso, sconclusionato, perdevo passaggi da una riflessione ad un'altra e mi ritrovavo un po' spaesata.
