I enjoyed this book a great deal. For years I have heard readers and literary pundits talk about how Chandler and Hammett are the grandfathers of mystery. For me, Chandler has always been the pinnacle, and no one else comes close. His turn of phrase and perception of life is unmatched. I read Hammett’s Red Harvest and thought, “eh.” Red Harvest was an okay book but not in the same league as Chandler. With, The Thin Man Hammett uses a different style than Red Harvest. A fun,quick and well written PI story. Hammett has a way with his main characters that dont dissapoint. Nick Charles carried the book well.
Even if i dont read light funny Noir usually i liked this one cause the typical Hammett ability with characters,story.

It's very odd how different the movie is from the atmosphere of the book. Nick and Nora don't seem quite so chatty in Hammett's novels - they seem like depressed alcoholics. I read this fourteen years ago, mind you, so I could be totally off-base.

Always one of my favourite films I finally got around to picking this up and am so glad I did. While it doesn't have the edge of The Maltese Falcon it is a little harder-edged than the film and a cracking read all the same.

I can read this story over and over. Nick and Nora Charles are considered Dashiell Hammett's great characters. I personally like the character Sam Spade better, but Nick and Nora are a lot of fun. They are as in tune with each other as a married couple can be. Between their banter and drinking habits, they can give James Bond a run for his money when it comes to drinking martini's, Nick and Nora manage to find time to solve mysteries.
