Coming out of nowhere to sell roughly fifty bajillion copies (proving that the Norse Trickster God Loki is alive and well and fucking with Publishers, by trying to prove that dark ultraviolent Swedish thrillers are the next big thing) I came to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo with high expectations, only to have them partially met.

There is a great deal to like about Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” As a mystery author, I was particularly enamored with his restraint in using tension and violence sparingly. All too often authors ratchet up the tension to such a degree that the story loses its ability to shock and surprise.

This book made me realize that I need to read more mysteries. Why don't I read mysteries more often? Because there are so many awful ones out there that I've tended to neglect the genre, as a whole, as a result. But when it's well done, I absolutely love them (I am just recently finding this out after over 20 years as a bookworm).

Although I wanted to hate this, I couldn't stop reading it. I think the only reason I picked it up is because I have some strange fascination with Sweden (don't ask). Despite the annoying pretense that every single woman in the novel just HAD to tumble into bed with the unassuming, middle aged male main character, I found myself...amused and intrigued. Sandwiches, snow, Sweden and sadism...

Didn't know what to expect going into it. Didn't know how I'd like reading a book set in Sweden. Nevertheless, it was an interesting book with Lisbeth being a cool character. At times, I found myself losing interest, in spaces where I thought the storyline lost itself. But that only diminishes the book slightly. I'm looking forward to the next one in the trilogy.

The book is much more violent than I would have expected, though the author does not linger too long on any of the violence. I had not heard much about the book when I picked it up but saw it everywhere so decided to jump on the bandwagon. I had no idea that the understory was all about sexual abuse and violence against women, which is not typically a topic I enjoy reading about. In sum, I found the book to be somewhat disturbing and unsettling, yet it still hooked me in and I finished it.

An excellent "cold case" murder mystery. Couldn't put it down. I read it in 2 days.

Loved the "Nordic Noir" feel. Best book I've read in a while. I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.
