I don't give very many 5-star ratings, and on literary aspects alone, Once a Runner would normally get my usual 4-star rating for books that are very well written and enjoyable. However, having been a competitive runner in high school and for one year in college during the 1970's (the time setting for this novel), I really connected with this book and with its main character, Quenton Cassidy.

Primarily of interest to serious runners, but perhaps also to anyone who has taken on a serious personal goal of any kind. Didn't quite live up to the hype for me (I'm a marathoner, but never a competitive runner), but an enjoyable read.

Reading it for my second time, this is the book that gets elite long-distance runners. If you are have been/are/will be a highly competitive runner or if you have a close relationship with one...the articulation in this book will be very helpful and rewarding. If you have no personal connection to highly competitive running, this book may feel absurdly intense and alienating. Bottom line: Best running book ever, but not for everyone.
