Damn, I should have had goodreads when I read the series.
Now it's been almost a year, but I'll try to write a decent review anyway.

The series is set in a world where vampires live happily for eternity, killing humans and partying every Friday night.
But seriously.
In the VA series humans don't know about vampires (except for the Alchemists, but you'll get to that in the last books.)
Said vampires are divided in two:
Moroi: the 'good' vamps, who drink from humans who willingly decide to become a snac ...more

hmmm... another vampire book, but this time its all about them...no humans allowed. On the plus side the main character is a bad girl, not your typical girl who cries "save me i'm a damsel in distress" or "I'm in love with a vampire". Rose is my typical kind of girl smart, sexy, not afraid to defend her best friend from anyone who tries to harm her.

Continuing on my Books I Probably Should Have Already Read trek... I wanted some more dumb paranormal lit (I SAY WITH LOVE AND AFFECTION), and after racking my brain, I remembered this series! Idk. I've been missing paranormal lit! I guess I'm sad because The Originals is ending this year and it's like the end of a teenage fangirl era. (Side note, though? It's super funny reading reviews for paranormal lit that came out around Twili Read #1

It's super funny reading reviews for paranormal lit that came out around Twilight because they usually include some variation of "THIS BOOK IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN TWILIGHT")

So I actually started reading "Vampire Academy" a few years ago when the movie was out, but I never finished it. I didn't hate it or anything, but it unfortunately caught me during my very frustrating "Hey, let's start books and then abandon them indefinitely" phase. I recently watched the movie for the first time and was surprised by how fun it was, so I'm hoping I enjoy this.

AFTER READING: I can see why people say not to judge this series based off the first book. It was pretty average Gossip Girl-esque paranormal romance. Yes, I had some cringe-inducing moments with all the slut-shaming/victim blaming flying around in this, but *throws up hands* I guess it's typical private school syndrome. Most stories centered around private schools always seem to come fully equipped with their own sets of mean girls/douchebag boys and tiered cliques. (I will say... kind of hated the part toward the end (view spoiler)) I think I like private school stories for how ~scandalous fun~ they are -- I get so worked up over the drama -- but yeah, pitting girls against each can get obnoxious after awhile. Idk, I'm a mixed bag of like/dislike with this part of the story.

I think the author's take on vampire lore is where "Vampire Academy" succeeds -- very good world-building. I'm interested to see how the second book compares based on the good parts I saw peeking through in the first book. Also, OMG, another dud with the audiobook. Jeeeeeez the narrator was so bad. I only really liked when she was speaking as Rose (which, I assume, was her real voice). ...more

I actually enjoyed this book. I like the idea of mortal and immortal vamps at war with each other. I was slightly annoyed with Rose sabatoging Lissa's relationship but past it off as a guardian thing. ...more
