“Don't you think everyone should have to come out? Why is straight the default? Everyone should have to declare one way or another, and it shouldn't be this big awkward thing whether you're straight, gay, bi, or whatever. I'm just saying.”

Aaahhh, this was super cute and witty and I ended up with such a big smile on my face ♡♡♡. And my suspicions about Blue proved to be true, yay! Looking forward to reading Becky's next book. ...more

This is a great book. It brings homosexual relationships into a healthy and accessible light. It shows how homosexual and heterosexual love are basically the same. It's just semantics. The parents are all wonderful. The teens are well thought out.

Many of the things that happen are things that would happen in real life. I could totally visualize this high school. I loved how Simon had many more supporters than he realized. Who knew? This book WAS set in Georgia, where I figured he'd be strung up ...more

It has been a minute since I have read a contemporary YA novel and I am so glad I gave this one a go! This story was so cute, sweet, funny, just perfect. I have no idea how a female author got inside the head of a gay teen boy so well! Reading this was like going back in time and watching my brother as a teen. Now I want to go eat some Oreo's..... ...more

This is a beautifully well written story! It is so grounded, and heart felt. What an amazing debut novel. I was skeptical at first, reading a book about a gay male character written by a female but Becky did not disappoint in the slightest. Simon is a very lovable character and his point of view is so honest, from his adorable charm to his slight flaws in judgment. The mystery of who Blue was, really helped drive the story. I also enjoyed the emails between Simon and Blue every couple of chapter This is a beautifully well written story! It is so grounded, and heart felt. What an amazing debut novel. I was skeptical at first, reading a book about a gay male character written by a female but Becky did not disappoint in the slightest. Simon is a very lovable character and his point of view is so honest, from his adorable charm to his slight flaws in judgment. The mystery of who Blue was, really helped drive the story. I also enjoyed the emails between Simon and Blue every couple of chapters; they reminded me so much of some of the emails and text messages I wrote to my own pen pals back when I was still closeted. I however did not have quite the love and support that Simon had, but it was so therapeutic to read and almost feel like I was going through his experience with him. Becky also did an amazing job in so many of her descriptions, from the sense of smell to the way the characters looked. It was so good!

I could go on forever about this book, but I just want to end this review by saying that this book meant a lot to me as a gay male, and a romantic. It was witty, beautiful, and extremely relevant today and I cannot wait to see the movie. ...more
