This is Clare's tenth Shadowhunter Chronicles book overall (I don't count the Bane Chronicles or Shadowhunter Academy because they were all coauthored and I'm counting only books written by Clare solo for the purposes of this review) and the 12th book I've read by her. And you'd think by this point, the 10th book in the Shadowhunters universe, her plots or writing or characters would start to feel derivative or boring or stale. And that is not the case at all. I find that I am quite impressed by This is Clare's tenth Shadowhunter Chronicles book overall (I don't count the Bane Chronicles or Shadowhunter Academy because they were all coauthored and I'm counting only books written by Clare solo for the purposes of this review) and the 12th book I've read by her. And you'd think by this point, the 10th book in the Shadowhunters universe, her plots or writing or characters would start to feel derivative or boring or stale. And that is not the case at all. I find that I am quite impressed by this book and I honestly think it's the best book she's written to date. Going from City Of Bones to this book, I can really see where she's grown as a writer. Her writing flows better and is sharper and just better in every way. Her characters have improved by leaps and bounds and don't feel nearly so derivative and she's gotten much better at developing them and introducing them. I saw a lot of people claiming that they felt that this book is a cash grab and I legitimately did not get that idea. The plot is really good and original and clearly took some time to create. If this had been a money grab, I would have expected Clare to skate on her laurels, but she didn't in the least. And this book seemed to signify something of a tonal shift for Clare's writing. This book had a noticeably more mature tone to it. If her past books were a very hard PG or soft PG-13, this book is a hard PG-13 or a very soft R, (view spoiler). I might even venture to call this book somewhat new adult in tone. Emma was a very different character from any of the female characters that Clare has written to date. She's always known about the Downworld and has been raised a Shadowhunter like Isabelle, but she's much more vulnerable and hurting than Izzy ever was. I liked Emma an awful lot. Julian was also quite different from any of Clare's previously written male characters. He reminded me the most of Jem from The Infernal Devices, but he wasn't quite so sensitive and of course,(view spoiler). I also liked him an awful lot. And I think he and Emma made a great pair and that's not a spoiler because it's basically in the description. (view spoiler) I really liked all the other characters, the Blackthorne siblings and Mark and Cristina in particular were my favorites. I found Mark and Cristina to be very well developed (view spoiler). (view spoiler) And I found Mark's characterization to be perhaps the best and strongest. Clare's descriptions of the Wild Hunt and Fae nature and everything Faerie are among the best of the series and are quite beautiful. And I really enjoyed the Los Angeles setting, though I didn't find that Clare really explored sea/water demons like she could have. The plot itself was very, very, very good and the best and I think most original plot that Clare has written so far. I would never ever have guessed that (view spoiler) was the villain and what his evil plan was. And it is creepy and evil. And I found that this book had a slight Gothic tone to it, due to (view spoiler). And the final page, boy, oh boy, it portends some very interesting and scary things for Lord Of Shadows and I truly cannot wait for it to be released! In conclusion, this book represents an exciting leap forward for the Shadowhunters universe and a thrilling reinvigoration and reinvention of the Shadowhunters world that promises to go some truly excellent places and one that I very highly and enthusiastically recommend. ...more

Oh.my.God. I am reeling from this book. This is my first experience with a Cassandra Clare book and I am hooked. Totally, completely, not going back hooked. I must read all of her other series at this point.

It took me much, much longer to read this then it normally would have due to life's distractions, certainly not because the book doesn't grab you. ...more

Cassandra Clare is an author whos books I d0n't exactly enjoy but who I cannot seem to stop reading. Everything aobut her stories, characters, and writing style should appeal to me and yet something about it just doesn't work. I have tried them as physical books, e-books, and audios and they don't really hold my interest and still I soldier on hoping I will enjoy them... ...more
