I loved this book once Akinli came into the picture. Cass has the ability to make the reader invested in her character's lives. I was rooting for Kahlen and Akinli the whole time! My only feedback was the backstory of Kahlen was dragged out; I wish it was shorter and you got to experience more of Kahlen and Akinli's lives together. Overall 3/5 stars; I think the amazing writing is worth sticking through the long beginning. ...more

The newly republished Siren by Kiera Cass does not have the strength of her Selection series. I was not drawn in by Kahlen, and I wasn’t convinced of her and Akinli’s love. I thought Akinli was cute and they had some sweet scenes, but I was not moved by their story. I thought it was juvenile that Kahlen’s biggest wish in life was still to get married, even after living decades. I enjoyed this fresh look at the legend/folklore/mythology of sirens. This telling makes the sirens as much the victims as those they lure to death. The ocean is a cognizant being that needs to be fed, but even she doesn't like taking lives or entrapping sirens into her service. Throw in an impossible romance and you've got yourself a teen hit.
