Re-read of September 2022: I initially intended just to skim through this book in order to continue with the series, but I ended up loaning it from the library to read it in more detail, slowing down to all the crucial parts and just skipping the more general descriptions. It was THAT good, this time around, too.

I didn't remember Lia's character growth throughout this read. Loved it, and I can't wait to see how much she continues to grow in the next installments. Loving the male lead, too *wink ...more

I put off reading this one because I figured it would be another hollow, poorly-written, love-triangle, new/young adult POS. But it isn't.

The writing reels you right in with normal conversations...none of the weird, blunt, stilted, unrealistic shit. I guess you could say it's a love triangle, but from the beginning Lia favors one of the guys, so it's more like a couple and a third wheel who won't let go.

We have a princess who runs away on the day of her wedding with a man she has never met. She runs off with a maid and finds work in a tavern. While she's there two men show up after tracking her down for weeks. Of course both fall in love with her. One is the man she was going to marry, the other is an assassin sent to make sure she never does marry said man...the author keeps the reader in the dark over which guy plays which roll, so I spent a decent chunk of time just re-reading to see if I could guess who was who. You do find out who each man is about half-way through, so don't worry, you aren't reading an entire book with a "surprise it's me!" and then everyone kisses and is HEA.

When we find out who is who is when things go downhill for Lia. She becomes a hostage and is being dragged along to another country with no hope in sight. During the trek she realizes a lot about herself, her gift, and her family. There is a prophecy that appears, and I tend to really dislike prophecy bullshit, but we'll see where this one takes us. The book does leave off in the midst of crossing the boarder into the other nation while being reunited with the other man. So maybe have book 2 on standby.

As for the romance; I've read better, but I have definitely read much worse. I'd give it a 6/10? There are a couple of sweet moments that give you the tingles, but you're also sitting there trying to figure out if it's the assassin or the prince she's dealing with, which was fun in general but kind of distracting. It wasn't lust at first sight and the relationship(s) develop over time. Also, all that happens is some kissing, so I'd call it "clean" for those who care about that sort of thing.

I plan on continuing the trilogy. I wouldn't say I'm frothing at the mouth for the next book, but I am very interested in reading it. ...more
