I will admit I am not the biggest fan of this author's first series for reasons she has grown beyond in Carve the Mark. the world building in this book can be a little heavy at times, but present. I never doubt that the author doesn't know where she's going or what she's talking about. I like the voice of Cyra as well as her character, strong but realistically flawed due to her power and upbringing and her view on her twisted brother. This didn't have very many likeable characters and some truly horrific things happen, but overall it was enjoyable enough. I wasn't particularly fond of how it ended, but that is the case with books in series on occassion. We'll see how this story continues. I rather liked Akos and grew to like Cyra too. We'll see.
