First, let me say I love how characters in older fantasy novels just accept the weird that comes their way.

"Oh, I've been turned into an old lady. I guess I should try to seek refuge in the wicked wizard's wandering castle."

"This strange dog man is made up of random people parts. Let's invite him in."

"However I draw the line at moving scarecrow men! Eek!"

None of it makes any sense, but somehow it works.

Prior to reading this, my only experience with Howl was the movie, which is weird in its own

I loved it! I hate to compare it to the film because they really are completely different art forms, but the book had a way more interesting plot involving the Witch of the Waste. Overall comedic, charming and beautifully written, but there is also a subtle message about loving people as they are in spite of their faults (think of the woth of the waste's sock project collecting body parts from different wizards or Sophie's hangups with her own imperfections).
