Trigger warning: homophobia, child abuse, trauma, violence, school shooting, bullying, and attempted rape of a minor.
From the beginning of the book until the last pages, I was spooked. I am not a horror fan, but this was done well. It reminds me of the Ghost Whisperer. Jake’s ability to see and talk with ghosts is problematic in that it leaves him vulnerable. Not sure how I feel about this one. It read very slow for the first 2/3 of the book and then got way more interesting.
Loved Jake, his friends, their stories, and the spooky plus we need more books about queer Black teens having adventures. But Sawyer, in audiobook format especially, was incredibly hard to experience. Honestly, I'd be up for hearing what's going to happen after all this and hope it looks like a slice of mundane life with ghosts on the side.

I clearly was not the right reader for this book. Even though I enjoy a lot of YA, the first few pages of this book annoyed me. Besides not liking how it's written, it also uses modern slang, such as “bruh.” Sadly, this means it isn't going to age well.
