I really wanted to enjoy this more and I wonder if I hadn't loved the original Caraval trilogy so much, would I have?

Stephanie's writing is fun and vivid and beautiful, but I just didn't connect with this one like I did the first. I really enjoyed the beginning, the way the story was set up and I was eager to learn more about the Magnificent North. But I felt that we only skimmed the surface. I really wanted to like this book. It had Marissa Meyer’s Heartless feel to it, but I was stumped and bored by the end and disappointed. There’s only so many times you can be annoyed by a main character’s flaws. She has a good heart, and good intentions, but she doesn’t listen to any of the other characters in the story who are trying to help her and it’s infuriating. This was a happy find for me. I love fairytale retellings, and while this wasn’t quite the retelling I expected, I loved the fates and Jacks. I’m looking forword to seeing what happens next, BUT I haven’t read Caraval yet. I might just have to press pause on this series until I read Caraval.
