Sophie and Agatha are friends taken from their hometown of Galvadon to the School for Good and Evil, where students learn to become fairy tale villains and heroes. Sophie, with her blonde hair and pink dresses, assumes she will become a princess. Lonely Agatha with her plain looks and black clothes, assumes she will become a witch. But when things switch, they find themselves caught in a real, live fairy tale in which only one can survive.

Sigh...this book feels like when I do a restaurant review and the food is really, really great, but the service is only so-so. The concept for this book is incredible. The writing is fantastic. The world is so wonderfully crafted...but parts about it really stink, and as a human being who is a woman and respects other women, I found it offensive.

A girl in the school for Good has only one objective...to become a beautiful, fainting princess. Because you absolutely can't be a girl and be good and hold a sword. That would be ridiculous! Girls even get failed if they can't get a date to the ball, which they make a comment about being stupid, but then everyone goes along with it because boys are cute! I managed to choke all of this down in the beginning because of our savoir, Agatha, who consistently pointed out how ridiculous all of this was...until(view spoiler)

And let's also talk about what it means to be Good or Evil. Apparently Sophie is Evil because she is selfish, obsessed with finding a prince, and will make fun of those not as pretty as she is...like every single girl in the School for Good. And Agatha is thought to be Evil because she isn't gorgeous and doesn't obsess about boys...so what's the lesson here? You're Evil if you don't look and act like everyone else, and it's okay to be cruel and selfish as long as no one calls you on it.

But the part that really had me cringing was the inevitable outcome of this situation...two friends turn against each other for a boy.

I'm still not sure how I feel about this one. It was over long and moved so slow I thought I wouldn't make it through, but the ending was exciting. I'm not sure I understand everything that has happened but I enjoyed large chunks of what was going on. The language is odd, phrases and structures that are difficult to grasp as you first read. It takes some getting use to - in fact it seems like maybe English is the author's second language in a way. I could be way off here, and that's just a style ...more

This premise for this story is really fun. I love the idea that fairytales are realized by kids going to a school for good and evil, and then based off of their school grades, being awarded their very own fairytale. I loved the themes of good versus evil, and whether we are born a certain way, or whether we can choose to be good or evil.

I had a hard time believing the supposed friendship between the two main characters. I felt like there was some serious character development flaws to the plot ...more
