I was pretty impressed with this book. I went into it blind (like I do with everything) and I wasn't 100% sure I was going to love it. I couldn't put it down. It reminded me of Mexico and the culture there. I am not Hispanic but my husband was born and raised in Baja Mexico and I met him there. This whole book reminded me of his huge family and their traditions. I loved the references to the women making food all the time and how you go over you eat. While I had a hard time connecting or caring very much about the main character, aND overall I did enjoy the book. However, I am not the target audience and I can see what many teens could con net wit the ma in character, while I thought she was a little mean and thought she was better than her friends. I finished this book in a day. It was a sharp contrast from the book I had just finished (The Vanishing Half) because the MC, Julia, was so much more in touch with her feelings than the characters in the other book. I felt for Julia and her struggles, and although Olga's "secret life" was the big mystery of the story, it was Julia's growth that really made me want to keep reading. ...more
