Ahhhh! This was probably one of the most disappointing sequels I've read, especially when I take into account how much I liked the first one.
Aside from the fantasticness that is the book cover and maybe one or two scenes, this installment lacked the eerie, desolate beauty of the first. Oh, Mara. I was about to give up on you until Dr. Kells got interesting.
I first read The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer in order to read this second volume for a 2014 Addicted to YA Book of the Month. The first book was intriguing enough simply wondering what is going on with Mara -- mental instability or magical powers or both? -- and perhaps her father's case. The second volume, however, plunges forward into a smattering of supernatural areas -- Santeria, fortune telling, possession, further Ouija b ...more
