What Members Thought

Why do people like this book? Granted, Death was a creative, amusing narrator, but I still don't understand the hubbub surrounding this novel, considering how well the novel's subject matter has been covered in other more outstanding books. I did finish it to the end, but I know I didn't find it a "mesmerizing and original story" written with "poetic syntax" that caused me to "deliberate" over the lines. I wanted the story to move forward a little more quickly than it did, given its 500+ pages.

What I loved about this book were the parts narrated by death - they were sweet, funny, and bitter. I loved the way the book (and death's narration) jumped around, backtracking through the story since a linear path would not have accurately covered both the war and Liesel's story.
