She continues to get closer to Aiden, but when she tells him she love him, he pulls back and ends their training sessions. I was so taken-aback by how much I loved Half-Blood, the first book in the series, that I just knew I had to read Pure and see if Jennifer L. Armentrout could keep up the momentum. Needless to say, after this book, I am a solid Armentrout fan and will follow her books to the ends of the earth. What a ride! From the start, the plotline was gripping, what with the war on two fronts that poor Alex has to fight—a war with the Covenant and its inhabitants, who view her as a weapon, a threat, or both; and with the daimons that keep attacking and killing Covenant inhabitants and sucking their life force, or aether, out of them. In between being accused by everyone as being responsible for the attacks and getting the crap kicked out of her in training and in encounters with the daimons, Alex really has nowhere to turn. This loneliness is especially poignant because she is head over heels for a guy that she really cannot have, Aiden. I love Alex and Aiden. Their chemistry is off the charts and I promise you, you can’t go into a scene with these two without fanning yourself off a bit when it’s over. But underneath all the sexual tension is a strong bond and mutual respect that I found much more compelling.

As I also mentioned, the plot is really exciting and gripping. It had elements of a murder mystery in some ways and I’m a sucker for those, ask anyone! Even the day-to-day training that Alex went through with Aiden and Seth at the Covenant was interesting, because not only did we get lots of scenes of Alex kicking ass (ha! Well, not quite, since Aiden is such a better fighter. But close!) but we also got a lot of character development between Alex and Aiden and Alex and Seth. The character that perhaps intrigued me and infuriated me the most was Seth. He’s mysterious and a douche, but also so simultaneously cunning and observant that it’s difficult to tell what exactly his motives are. But for some reason, he’s really good with Alex. I liked how his entire demeanor changed around her, and how their Apollyon bond developed into more than just physical attraction.

Some parts of the book (and some characters) really drove me up a wall, but in a good way. I was worried for Alex for most of the book, and I even cried a few times with her when she was dealing with all the pressure and the antagonism from the Covenant members (not to mention boy trouble, which was probably the hardest of all). I was completely emotionally attached to both the story and its protagonist. The ending was just the right amount of shocking that I wanted to go out and read the next book right away. I can’t wait to see what happens to Alex and Aiden, and what Alex’s powers manifesting means for her and Seth. Overall, Pure was an enjoyable second book in a series that has taken me on an exciting ride so far.
