This is the first true classic I can remember reading and I am sure it is one of the works that inspired me to be an English teacher and an avid book lover.
Having watched several film adaptions of the book, I hadn't bothered to read this before. The movies don't do adequate justice to the book. Jane is nothing like Hardy's Bathsheba or Tess; the latter heroines are whimsical and so prone to tragedy. These characters are often "punished" for their vices and even if they don't tragically end up dying, they are certainly humbled by their horrific experiences to become submissive wives.
