I first read this when I was in high school, and I had a tough time getting through it. It didn't always hold my interest. I got halfway through it, put it down for months and then saw the movie based on this book (the one with Gwyneth Paltrow) and was motivated to finish the book. I think it was hard to get through because of the long paragraphs that contained extensive details and explanations. Hmmm... I sorta felt like I was in on a gossip circle the whole time I was reading it. I am rather glad it all worked out for Emma in the end though, and equally glad she learned her lesson. Not my favorite Austen book. I love Austen for her ability to create strong female characters, even in their time you can see their strength and wisdom. In Emma all I saw was a child, but I suppose that is what Austen, needed to create a humble character that learns lessons in the end.
