I’ve had real trouble organising my thoughts for this one so here is a bit of brain dump!
Hardy’s descriptions of nature are impeccable! He describes views of the night sky and storms rolling in and the images are so vivid you can feel yourself there.
These descriptions project a love and respect for the landscape they convey and this is contagious to the reader. The drama in nature is often a herald for some upheaval in the lives of the characters also.

Melodramatic but one of Hardy's more 'upbeat'!
Tess, Jude - Hardy has a few rather downbeat stories under his belt, with his tales of Rural England. This was a classic I'd never read, but having watched an adaptation recently (Carey Mulligan), I was really keen to read this tale of a woman with three men circling her.

Hardy is one of my favorites of the "classic" authors. This is probably my favorite of his works that I've read - while it's just as depressing as the others, it ends on a more hopeful note than usual.
