I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 as a concession to the fact that there are some bits of stunning prose, but overall, reading this book has been utterly painful, the kind of pain that makes you groan the moment you look at the page in front of you.

I'm glad I've read it and that I can make an informed opinion now. But boy am I glad it's over. ...more

This is a rambling book that is all over the place. The plot occasionally inches forward and then whole chapters are dedicated to whaling-related topics that have little to do with the story: without these meanderings it would be far shorter and probably mroe interesting.
