I didn't find this quite as enjoyable as The Thirty-Nine Steps, but it was fun reading.

What I found fascinating throughout was the fact that this was written in 1916, only two years into WWI, and yet his description of the trenches is so vivid! I kept wondering if he fought in WWI, and if so, how he managed to produce a novel at the same time. Wikipedia tells me he was a war correspondent in France, so I guess that explains it.

This is a good WW1 adventure tale. The setting of Germany and Turkey during WW1 makes this tale a bit out of the ordinary. It seems reasonably accurate from a historical perspective, if a bit propaganda-ish.
