In a my quest to read the source material from my favourite musicals this has been a disappointing addition.
I'm really not a fan of this detached, journalistic style of writing that seems particular popular in turn of the century genre fiction including in this book. Another thing working against it for me was it's serialised nature which led to lots of annoying cliff hangers and tangents. I felt at times like I was reading a script for a TV show.

Please note that I read an earlier English translation of this that is in the public domain so I might not have received the full experience of this book but honestly I liked this book enough to want to re-read it at some point with an more recent English language translation of it!
That being said this is a book much like Bram Stoker's "Dracula" that tends to be my favorite kind of classic literature! A type of book that has had many film adaptations/takes on it, and has a bit of a "sacred cow" ...more
