I really wanted to think this book was awesome. It's a solid mystery, but I don't like it nearly as much as I liked Special Topics in Calamity Physics. The main character was totally meh - and I'm over reading about old white dude's midlife crisis. Also a bit of the manic pixie dream girl happening up in here. Started out strong with a very cool premise, and Pessl can do some things, like invoke a spooky atmosphere, very well. But about halfway through it's like she gave up - the plot got boring, the writing got sloppy, and the whole thing just collapsed. The work as a whole doesn't fulfill the promise of the beginning, when I thought I had just met my new favorite book.

I loved this book at first, but around the halfway point I almost stopped reading it numerous times. I'm still not sure how the last half of this book got so bogged down and read so differently from the beginning.
