I haven't read Pakistani author Hamid's first two novels (Moth Smoke and The Reluctant Fundamentalist), but after reading this, I'm very inclined to seek them out. Here, he makes three and a half interesting choices in the telling of a straightforward rags-to-riches story, all of which succeed in the service of the story he's telling about life in modern "Rising Asia."

A nice, quick read and an intriguing concept. It is simultaneously evidently not set in a Western, advanced economy setting, but vague enough to be relatable across multiple country contexts across Asia. Though many human experiences are shared, there are still those that are so specific that it feels like our own - and even that sentiment is one that all people can empathize with.

I didn't love the layout of this book. I generally find 2nd person narrative annoying, and the jokey self-help descriptions at the beginning of every chapter did a disservice to the more poignant plotline Hamid followed. I think if this had been written like a straightforward novel I would have enjoyed it more.
