If you like strong, nerdy female protagonists, this is the novel for you. Alma, our heroine, is a scientist. Specifically, she studies mosses - in the 1800s. The book follows her from birth, but Gilbert made an interesting choice to deviate from that for a bit, that I thought really worked well. For a portion of the beginning of the novel - when Alma is a very small girl - instead of her story, we get the story of her father.
