Not every story here is a home run (I didn't care for the title one, which closes the collection), but if this review was based only on her writing, it would be five stars. Her short stories, all set in Canada and nearly all featuring tough, unsentimental, fascinating women, each contain more depth than lesser writers fit into sprawling novels. I didn't realize when I checked this out that I had already read so many of the stories in it -- I recognized at least three of them, and so I skipped them. I can't decide how much I like Alice Munro, and I sort of feel that I should like her more than I do. There is something about her stories (at least the ones I have read) that is very dark and depressing, though it's not overt.
