After two weeks of reading three or four pages at a time, I have decided to give up and admit defeat.

The other two Robert Langdon books have been interesting, with interesting topics and great locales. Having never lived in either Italy or France for any amount of time, however, maybe the great locales aren't quite as great as I thought while fascinatedly reading about the Illuminati or the Holy Grail.

As a DC native, I was super excited to hear that Dan Brown had written a book that for the mos

I was really excited to read the latest Brown book. I enjoyed "The Da Vinci Code" and thought reading his latest thriller, taking place in D.C. and involving Masonic history, would be right up my alley. Unfortunately, it didn't.

The book kicks off with energy and lots of fun plot twists and history. However, the book is waaaaaaaaay too long and definitely needed some editing. Parts of the book are completely implausible (even by Brown standards), to the point where I actually yelled out loud "oh,

A quick read, but nowhere near as engaging as DaVinci Code or Angels & Demons. 300 pages lead up to a "matter of national security" that doesn't seem to be all that threatening. Also, the ending made me want to throw up a little. ...more

The Lost Symbol follows Brown's symbologist character, Robert Langdon (who also appears in the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons) as he discovers some of the secrets of Washington DC's masonic beginnings.

I have a bone to pick with Dan Brown. His writing isn't stellar but his storylines are good. With "The DaVinci Code," I almost wanted to put the book down because the writing was so bad but I couldn't because the story was so good. "The Lost Symbol" was very much that way as well although the

I finally got around to reading this just because it is set in Washington DC, and I always think it's fun to read about places that I know and can relate to. It was a good, though predictable, story, and I was reminded that Brown's writing is at times so overdescriptive that I was flipping ahead pages and pages (I once tried listening to The Da Vinci Code on CD, and had to shut it off because the descriptions would become so boring and tedious I was afraid I was going to fall asleep while drivin ...more

I LLOOVVVEEED DaVinci Code and really like Angels & Demons. Maybe my expectations were too high this time. There were moments of surprise, intrigue... but the thing that struck me most was that, unlike the other two, I wasn't compelled to read. I could put it down and walk away.

That said, it was enjoyable, fun and I loved learning more about DC and Masonic traditions.

Overall: Meh.

I liked this more than I expected too, in no small part to the fact that it was set entirely in DC. Dan Brown may be controversial, but he does provoke thought!

Not as fun as The Da Vinci Code. The ending left much to be desired. I'd recommend any of Dan Brown's other books before this one. ...more

Dan Brown let me down for the first time. I had been waiting to read this for a while and finally put it on my eReader.

For all the twists in turns of other pieces, The Lost Symbol lost it's excitement around page 150. I figured out certain mysteries pretty early on, there wasn't too much action. It was a good story, but could have been more condensed.

My brother said "it just sort of ends", and he was right.

I'm not put off Dan Brown forever. I'd read what he puts out next. But bring me back to

This book was awful, but I kept going anyway. I think what really bothered me, aside from DC's portrayal, was that the things that were supposed to be shocking national security issues were... not. You're not scared if you don't think it's so bad if everyone doesn't succeed. ...more
