A beautiful but disturbing book about sexual repression and racial oppression on a Caribbean island just after its liberation from slavery under British rule. It is, as well, a peek at mental illness in the backstory of Mr. Rochester's wife before she is sold off and locked in his attic in Emily Bronte's Jane Eyre.

It was a strange 60s novel and I couldn't sympathize with Antoinette at all...but it was incredibly well written and short, so I'll give it three stars.
