A beautiful but disturbing book about sexual repression and racial oppression on a Caribbean island just after its liberation from slavery under British rule. It is, as well, a peek at mental illness in the backstory of Mr. Rochester's wife before she is sold off and locked in his attic in Emily Bronte's Jane Eyre.

[2004 review.] I think the moral of this story is: if your husband decides to start calling you Bertha, run. I really liked the writing style, the story, all kinds of stuff about this. Even if it is glorified Jane Eyre fanfiction.
Original review: 3. New review: 4. I appreciate more what this book was trying to do and say after gaining a better understanding of postcolonial literature and the geopolitical history of this part of the world.
It was a strange 60s novel and I couldn't sympathize with Antoinette at all...but it was incredibly well written and short, so I'll give it three stars.
