3.5 stars. Re-telling of Jane Eyre, set in 1950s and 1960s Scotland and Iceland. I vaguely remember reading Jane Eyre when I was a teenager and even though the details are hazy, this book at times seemed like it was a little too faithful in its re-telling and not inventive enough (we can read the original story if we want to read the original story). I was lucky enough to win a copy as a giveaway. It took me awhile to get to reading it and I wish I would have read it sooner. The character of Gemma was such a delight. She was strong and determined despite her circumstances. I found myself rooting for her along her journey. The supporting characters all play an equally important in Gemma's flight but Mr. Sinclair was my favorite. I happily recommend this book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a coming of age / romance novel, pretty straightforward. It will be compared to Jane Eyre, but should be evaluated in its own right. The similarities are in plot alone. Our protagonist / narrator, Gemma/Fjola, is likeable, slightly flawed, and, predictably, has some growing up to do (hence the genre). Our hero is a pretty traditional Austen type hero (more so than Bronte). The novel sticks to all of the classic literary conventions and is largely predictable,
