Finished just in time for tonight's book club! Carey's writing is the best part of this novel, and it is just beautiful, if a little "crafty" at times. But he is a creative writing professor, so what can we expect? Loses a star because Parrot's pre-America story wasn't too interesting to me, and it took up a lot of pages.

I am sure I would have enjoyed this more had I read Alexis deToqueville's work. But I haven't. As an historical novel on its own, it's not particularly successful. We follow the journey of a French aristocrat sent away to America for safety from political turmoil at home, and a British orphan whose dreams of becoming an artist have not come to fruition. There's humor, some psychology (though not subtle), and a few interesting plot lines, but overall there was nothing captivating here.
