Mattie lives in Upstate New York in the early 1900s. She has a love for words and reading and dreams of going to college someday. A solid YA book that does a good job weaving a murder that happened in real life along with a fictional tale of a talented, small-town girl who yearns for more. Well-developed characters, a good amount of drama (but none too over-the-top), and a well-executed plot make for a compelling read.
