Mattie lives in Upstate New York in the early 1900s. She has a love for words and reading and dreams of going to college someday. She tries to balance her education and dreams with the attraction that she feels towards Royal Loomis. A solid YA book that does a good job weaving a murder that happened in real life along with a fictional tale of a talented, small-town girl who yearns for more. Well-developed characters, a good amount of drama (but none too over-the-top), and a well-executed plot make for a compelling read.
Edie Ching could not have reviewed this wonderful story any better. "I just loved this book, the desire of the heroine to leave her family and explore her possibilities, the horrific burden her mother places upon her, the mystery, the place was real as were the bulk of the characters." --I listened to the audio version and that enhanced my enjoyment.
