Ugg. I usually can't go lower than two stars no matter how indifferent I feel towards something, but I was actually intrigued by how annoying this was and it kept me reading until I made myself return it to the library in order to stop the cycle of hurt.

I'm still searching for a modern Jane Austen read-alike, and,despite the reviews and comparisons, this isn't it. Yes, it's a densely populated (perhaps too densely) and gracefully / simply written book with some sense of the '90's era sensibilities, but it lacks Austen's wit and all of the convoluted social norms and complications. I found it difficult to enjoy at first as it seemed a bit too light and airy, but as the novel progressed it proved a more serious read, and a few real themes were ta

I always think I'm going to love Allegra Goodman's books because I really liked Kaaterskill Falls, but I think at this point I have to acknowledge that I haven't liked any of the others as much - and was definitely disappointed by this one, although it was fine and entertaining.
