Fun! This is an interesting mixture of history, science, fantasy and mystery. There are also three types of creatures sharing the world with humans. The important ones are: A witch, who refuses to use her magic is studying history, a vampire is a scientist, and then their are the daemons, who are incredibly creative and unstable. Why can't Diana, control and use her magic? Why was she able to call the Ashmole 782 manuscript once and not again?

This read like a romance novel to me, with the main twist being two predictably ill-fated lovers fighting against a world that doesn’t understand them — and with lots of undertones of a very traditionalist worldview with damsels in distress needing rescue while older, rich men make the decisions. All of that was wrapped up in the trappings of a fantasy book (vampires, witches, daemons) and lots of historical references, and a brewing magical war.

4.5. I had heard a lot of good things about A Discovery of Witches and with the second book having just come out, I thought it was the perfect time for me to dive into this one. I definitely was not disappointed. Standing at close to 600 pages, I thought that I might get a little bored with the book (I really have the attention span of a flea, especially during the summer). This was not the case at all. The book has a great story line that really keeps you going. There's a lot of mystery in this

I want to give this 5 stars HOWEVER, for a vampire-love-story, there are too many things that remind me of Twilight, particularly in the middle of the book - the "when will he admit he loves me because I know I can't live without him" part of the plot. FURTHER, I'm with Sarah and Emily - Diana's commitment to Matthew throws overboard so many things in her life that made her her. Granted, many of those things were habits she'd built up to protect herself from magic and to differentiate herself fr

Brutal quantities of borderline-abusive heterosexual kink in this otherwise inoffensive disposable urban fantasy. I know how common "strong independent woman falls for overprotective, controlling man and likes it" kinks are among straight people, but y'all need to negotiate that shit properly.
I was going to see if I could think of anything else to say about this book, but... no, not really.
Not great sequence of events:

I started out sucked into the story, but by the end I didn't care enough to read the sequel. It's not that it's not interesting, it just felt like it could have done with another round of edits to tighten up the story.
