I'm not the reader for this book. I don't like reading a book that looks like straight fiction and finding out midway through that there are supernatural elements - I like my genres clearly defined. I did like the ending though.

This book was excellent slow burn horror that never got boring. Even in the long stretches of calm, you invested in the characters and the difficult lives of the dwindling aristocratic family whose house is crumbling around them. Most fascinating of all is the narrator, the sensible, kind town doctor who, as the story unfolds, begins to hint that he has more issues with control and entitlement than at first appeared. Sarah Waters is no stranger to crafting a strong novel with vibrant characters but I found this to be one of her weaker books. Compared to the phenomenal historical fiction novels Tipping the Velvet (read it! amazing!) and almost as great Night Watch, the Little Stranger felt a little flat.
