Really good book with some very long slow passages (sorry...). Cronin has some changes in narrative voice that make really slow down the books rhythm, but overall I felt I had to finish the book - and let me just say the end is incredibly jarring (I sort of expected the outcome, but the way it was written was spectacular). I appear to have read a different novel than the rest of the class. Instead of a stunning work of horror fiction, I found a boring, overwrought, and badly paced slog of a book. I eventually just starting skipping each and ever long, introspective passage of this or that character's dreams/thoughts/memories to focus on the too brief but very exciting action scenes. ...more

I struggled to get through this one. Perhaps it's one reason I don't read many "big girl" (i.e. adult) novels.

Way too long and too many characters, I found myself daydreaming while reading quite a few times.

Perhaps those that like long books about vampires will enjoy this one. Give me YA fiction any day. ...more

Thoroughly enjoyed this read. It was easy to connect with the characters and their struggles. Great speculative fiction setting - the different locations felt real.
