Really good book with some very long slow passages (sorry...). Cronin has some changes in narrative voice that make really slow down the books rhythm, but overall I felt I had to finish the book - and let me just say the end is incredibly jarring (I sort of expected the outcome, but the way it was written was spectacular). I appear to have read a different novel than the rest of the class. Instead of a stunning work of horror fiction, I found a boring, overwrought, and badly paced slog of a book. I eventually just starting skipping each and ever long, introspective passage of this or that character's dreams/thoughts/memories to focus on the too brief but very exciting action scenes.

I struggled to get through this one. Perhaps it's one reason I don't read many "big girl" (i.e. adult) novels.
Way too long and too many characters, I found myself daydreaming while reading quite a few times.
Perhaps those that like long books about vampires will enjoy this one. Give me YA fiction any day. ...more
