Succinctly: Kind of slow, but I enjoyed the characters and writing style so much that I didn’t mind.

Longer: The story is centered around an annual, vicious horse race on an island where there are “water horses,” re-imagined here from their Celtic myth origins as magical, bloodthirsty horses that live in the sea and are harnessed by the locals for this race. The horses are the only magical element of the story, which otherwise focuses on the inhabitants of the island and their challenges eking ou

A very intriquing main character and family. Kate is better known as Puck. She says, "My mother always said that I was born out of a bottle of vinegar instead of born from a womb and that she and my father bathed me in sugar for three days to wash it off. A gripping, taut adventure tale about magical horses and a race.

Personally, I hate horse books. Perhaps it's because I don't like horses. But this book hooked me from the start and never let go. Maybe it's because the horses are evil :)

I've never read a book like this be

Stiefvater takes a myth of water horses who live in the ocean and like to dine on flesh. For someone like me who is afraid of horses, the thought of a creature like that is simply horrifying and the creatures are definitely scary in the book. The inhabitants of the island surrounded by the water horses participate in the Scorpio Races where the inhabitants try to ride the water horses as long as they can in a race.

Puck Connolly is the first girl to ride in the Scorpio Races. She's strong and se

I really loved this book, so I'm not sure why it isn't a five-star book, but it just isn't. Maybe because there are way too many horse books out there, and parts of this seemed slightly derivative of The Hunger Games. ...more
