I started this one years ago and put it down because I couldn't get into it. I'm glad I picked it up again and that I read it with friends. It took longer, as normally I would read a book like this in the span of a week, but it made me really think about and enjoy the writing and the characters and the story itself. In fact, it took a long time to get to the point of the story, but I didn't care, because I loved the journey. This is a beautiful and fantastical book, and I only wish I could visit ...more

I was very, very happy that an ARC of this book was sent to me. There has been a ton of buzz about this book over the summer and it's safe to say that there are probably going to be a lot of people adding this to their Fall Must Read lists and in my opinion, the buzz is fully understandable and warranted. This book will sweep you away. I love when descriptions are so deep and so vivid that you have absolutely no trouble imagining the surroundings in the book.

I really enjoyed this, and I think if you like magical realism, you will like it as well. This is the story of a circus that is only open at night, and is very different from any other circus you've been to. I found the characters to be compelling, and I liked the main element ...more

Slight tale about magic and the power of love. I think this book would've been better served as a screenplay for a movie rather than a novel. Too much of the magic that happens is vague and would be more intriguing in a different medium. However, some of the imagery (of the sights and the sounds of the circus in particular) is wonderful. I felt as though I could smell the caramel! ...more

This book was trying really hard to be the next Twilight/Harry Potter/insert latest fantasy-scifi flavor of the month.

I thought this was an incredible book - vividly written, with characters I found myself aching for. The stark visuals of the circus - a place of wonderment, done in black and white - permeated every part of the story as well.

This is the literary equivalent of Cirque du Soleil, in a good way and in a bad way.
