3.5 stars. "The Light Between Oceans" is a historical fiction book that takes place in Australia. A couple is charged with keeping the lighthouse functioning on an island. It's just Isabel and Tom and no one else. Isabel longs for a baby but is not having any luck conceiving so when a boat washes up on the shore with a dead man and a baby, it seems like fate has brought the couple the baby that they long for. Garbage! Isabel is the worst from start to finish! Ruiner of everything!
The author does a beautiful job of showing how complicated it can be to "do the right thing". The characters are rich and complex, yet it was easy to read.

A lovely, poignant and desperate story. Whenever I put down the book, I had to remind myself that I was not on a windswept island.
If every book has it's reader, I was not this book's reader. Objectively speaking I can say that it was well written and I can see how it would be a book to be devoured by the right person. Since bad/hard things happen in relation to a child, I couldn't read more than a chapter or two at a time before I needed to put it down and read something else. Hence it took me 8 months to read.
