Murakami is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. His writing style is very unique. "Norwegian Wood" is one of his stories that is without the magical realism elements of other stories like "Kafka on the Shore" and "The Wind Up Bird Chronicle." Toru is a young college student who falls in love with Naoko, another student. The story follows the twists and turns of their relationship.

If you have ever read Murakami, you probably know that this is not a straight-up love story.
There are some unrealistic descriptions of women's desires in this novel which the feminist inside of me would like to rant about more, however, I am going to keep this PG. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This is not what I expected after reading Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, but it's beautiful. I think I didn't like the translation as much as HBW (impossible to say what was issues with translations versus issues with original style), but it's still a wonderful and heartbreaking story.

Very high 3. I really missed the surreal touches, but there's enough of the Murakami atmosphere (melancholy, mystery, etc.) to make this highly enjoyable.
