I reread this classic for kids book club later this month. As a adult reading this again a few things struck me.
1) Dahl is such a master of language. He manages to be descriptive and emotionally compelling. There was a ton of great vocabulary in those oompa loompa songs. He also does a great job playing with dual ideas of hunger.
2) Speaking of the oompa loompa - yeah, wow how colonisist/racist are little slaves from an island happily work in your factory? Apparently some of these describitions ...more
