I've been in the mood for dystopian books lately, and this definitely qualifies. Beautifully written, and a fast read despite relatively little action. There's a lot of subtlety to the interactions between the characters, like a lot of books that I guess would be described as about manners (not quite sure what the genre is...), which is all the more interesting for being set in an essentially an alternate universe that's only slightly different from what we know. I intentionally avoided this book for years, because I knew the twist so thought I wouldn't like it. Obvs I am stupid.
My biggest frustration is wanting to know MORE about this society: surely there are pockets of resistance, people who try to intentionally vanish, etc etc. So tantalizing to keep the focus so human and small. ...more
